First anecdote
It is believed that when Indra, the heaven god, was defeated by the Asuras, his wife Indrani tied a protective thread on his arm so that he could face the enemies firmly.
Second anecdote
There was a time when blood was flowing from Lord Krishna's finger. Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas, tore the edge of her sari and tied it on her finger. Lord Krishna pledged to protect him and played him for his lifetime.
Third anecdote
When there was a war between King Porus and the great warrior Alexander, Alexander's wife tied a thread on her wrist to protect Porus. It is also considered a form of Raksha-Bandhan.

Another such example is found in Indian history, when Rani Karmavati of Chittor tied a rakhi to Humayun to protect her from Bahadur Shah. Humayun tries his best to protect her, but is unable to stop the growing move of the enemies and eventually Rani Karmavati takes the Jauhar fast.
Fifth story
This is also exemplified in modern history, when Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore urged Hindus and Muslims to unite after the Partition of Bengal, and urged the two communities to tie protective lines on each other's wrists.
